The Kid’s Playroom Week 1: So Much Planning

The Kid’s Playroom Week 1: So Much Planning

Well hello there dear friends and Happy Valentines Day Hangover Day!  How did you spend your holiday?  Pre-kids I would always cook a “fancy” dinner and one year I even created a menu with courses.  Post kids I’m like – take out please!!!  I don’t want to cook or clean a damn thing!  It’s funny how what sounds nice totally shifts through the different stages of life.

Anyway I’m checking in today to give you an update on my latest #OneRoomChallenge – the kid’s playroom!  I asked you guys to vote for my next project on Instagram and the playroom was the clear winner.  Which I am THRILLED about because that room is SO BORING right now!  Here are some “before” photos (the only time I can get away with an unfiltered  picture of a messy room.  Also, hi Chase!)

I decided to give myself a totally unreasonable budget of $250 just to see if I could do it.  And man, budgeting is HARD work.  I’d say coming up with a cohesive design can be challenging sometimes too, but when you’re working under the constraints of a budget, and in this case one that is overly ambitious and self-imposed, it’s even more daunting.  Sure, there are some decisions that become easier.  For example wallpaper is off the table because it doesn’t fit in the budget (in fact the most affordable wallpaper option I found for ONE WALL was over $300.)  So stencil it is!  But then stencil gives me endless color options which has my head spinning!

So all of that said, here is the initial mood board I created.

And like I already mentioned, as much as I LOVE that wallpaper and explored every option to figure out how to incorporate that into my design, it just didn’t fit in my budget.  So I found this sweet stencil instead:

Which is from Cutting Edge Stencils and LINKED HERE.  It was $45 with a 10% off coupon.  This will go on the wall behind the couch.  That leaves me with $205 for the following plan:

Paint – $25/gallon for 3-4 gallons = $75-$100.  Right now I’m thinking Bermuda Pink for the ceiling, a still undecided blue/gray for the background of the waves accent wall (In the Midnight Hour is too dark), Swiss Coffee for the other walls and waves, and MAYBE the Florida Orange somewhere… BUT WHERE???  Will come back to this later.

Constellations/Stars decals$45 for two sets for the ceiling from Amazon, LINKED HERE and HERE

Paper Planes – decals $32 HERE or stencil $42 HERE.  These will go on the wall behind the cubbies.

City Wall Decals – $59 village HERE, or separated houses/trees HERE; or $63 doodle style HERE

Surfing Sloth Print – $39 HERE

TOTAL TO DO EVERYTHING = $295 – $334

Unfortunately something is going to have to go to stay within my budget.  Either that or I have to sell something currently in the playroom to give myself a little more wiggle room…

Also I KEEP CHANGING MY MIND regarding what colors I want where.  Should I stay somewhat traditional and do blue waves, or go a little funky with PINK waves?  Then blue ceiling, and orange and pink paper planes???  I can’t decide!  PLEASE give me your input, I’d love to hear what you think!

I feel like I need to apologize for how scatterbrained this post is… fingers crossed by next week I’ll have more decisions ironed out.

Have a great weekend!
