When Lipstick Inspires – and How it Inspired Me

When Lipstick Inspires – and How it Inspired Me

How inspiring are these lipsticks with art designed by Lisa Congdon? Not only are the three shades super fun and bold, the colorful and happy art is something I want to hang on my walls! And with inspiring quotes like “The future depends on you” how can you not love these cleaner, safer, and beautiful and lipsticks created by Beautycounter to celebrate their 7th anniversary? Oh and the packaging is sustainable. Boom.

You may not know this, but I partnered with Beautycounter about 6 months ago. I want to share with you the reasons why, and I’m going to get vulnerable. I can talk about our products ALL. DAY. LONG. Because I’m obsessed with them and I 100% believe in their performance and safety – as someone who suffers from ulcerative colitis and hashimotos, and also someone who has a daughter who steals all my lipglosses.  I can talk about our advocacy and humanitarian work super proudly, as I truly believe we are helping shape the personal care landscape for future generations.  But talking about the business and opportunity is just… different.  It’s very personal.

I – hand to God – never thought in one million years I would become a consultant for a beauty brand.  After I left my Portfolio Management job at BlackRock in 2015 to stay home with my babies – a career I worked VERY hard for, but was not passionate about – I thought I would stay home until they were both school age.  Then I would inevitably go back to a full time position in the city… with that commute… and those hours (In the still male-dominated field of finance, it’s really all or nothing.)

So as my kids started getting older and were actually both in some school (even 10 hours of preschool a week gets an AMEN!) that “going-back-to-work” reality started setting in and frankly sounded – horrible.
At home I was starting to feel lost and stuck.  I even felt depressed at times, dreading the idea of staying home forever but equally unhappy with the thought of going back to “the grind.”  I was super confused and unsure about everything except for the fact I needed something in my life that made me feel creative, fulfilled, happy, proud, and full of self worth.  With a little more time on my hands, I knew I had to flex my business brain again.  I CRAVED it.

Last summer I ran into my friend and Beautycounter consultant at a birthday party and I asked her about the business, really just making conversation.  But the more she talked about her story, the more curious I got.  She offered to meet me for coffee to chat about it, to which I replied “sure, I don’t want to waste your time though – I’m 99% sure it’s not for me.”  I literally wrote this.  I joined the next day.

Beautycounter checks EVERY. SINGLE. BOX.  Not only is clean and safe personal care something I am extremely passionate about, the business aspect is flexible, SUPER fun, creative, and also challenging – in that good “flexing your business brain” way.  I had made assumptions about sales and recruiting requirements, social media, and initial investments only to have all my concerns totally squashed.  If you know my husband Sean at all he is the MOST cynical person on the planet, and even he agrees that this opportunity was one I couldn’t pass up.

Over the last 6 months I have gone from making enough money to pay for groceries, to now making enough to cover preschool and our car payment.  My future goals are ambitious but that’s what is so wonderful about this business – it can be as much or as little as you want it to be.

If you are ever curious about learning more about the opportunity, PLEASE reply to this post.  If any of this resonates with you OR you think someone you know could benefit from learning more, again – reach out!!!  Now through March 8th enrolling consultants who purchase Starter Sets receive their Enrollment Kit – FREE!  This is a $98 value and only the second time Beautycounter has ever done this!

This business isn’t for everyone but if you think it might be for you I’d love to tell you more about my experience.  I never thought I would do this, but I am SO GLAD I did.
