My Master Bedroom Makeover – Week 2: Paint Exhaustion
Hi friends! How are you and what are you up to? Let me begin by telling you what I am not doing today: painting. I have spent an obscene number of hours painting my bedroom, in anywhere from 20 minute to two-hour increments (because #momlife) and finally just finished the ceiling. I can honestly say that the decision to paint my bedroom myself may not be one of my best. Especially considering I have a 2.5 year old on a full-time basis who “no want to play blocks! Me want to paint!!!” And painting with water lasted less than one minutes and apparently is NOT an adequate substitute. So some extra screen time and favors from friends and family later, we are here. With a half painted bedroom. And none of the fun stuff done. Boo.
The good news is the crappiest part of the process is out of the way! My ceiling, I came to intimately discover, not only is enormous but also mostly consists of REALLY FUN angled walls that eventually lead up to a super high center. There are probably tools for this type of thing but being the hard-headed novice that I am, I stuck to my trusty roller brush on a ladder. I used a two-inch angle brush for edges and other detailing like around vents and lights. Another REALLY FUN fact you may have heard me complain about on Instagram stories is that even when you paint white on a similar shade of white, you need two coats. I guess I should have known this one. But I cursed the paint Gods for a solid five minutes upon this realization.
So as we look ahead to Week 3, here is what I hope to get done:
- Paint the walls green
- This will involve somehow taking down the barn door (shown below) to paint around it, then install again (hopefully hubby is reading this because SURPRISE!)
- I’m also wavering on my paint color decision. Should I stick with Miramichi (pictured below, bottom) or switch to Tarrytown Green (pictured below, top)??? It’s been rainy and foggy around here lately and Miramichi has been reading a little too teal blue in our bedroom. I know I’m insane, I already bought all the paint but I get MAJOR ANXIETY when I have to commit to a color. Even when you can just paint over it. Anyway I should maybe figure this out before I actually start painting… HELP ME PLEASE!
- Begin planning out my geometric accent wall/bay window/alcove
- Call it what you want, but I am stenciling this area INCLUDING the angled ceiling part.
I decided to go with THIS STENCIL because it was $62 all-in for a very similar look, whereas the wallpaper I wanted would have been $600+. That’s a $500 savings folks, and you know I’m all about saving (CHEAP!).
I actually also enjoy the creative and artistic aspect of stenciling and calculating how to best center it on the wall. Yes, I’m a super big nerd. For proof, see THIS POST on my algebraic formulas for hanging a gallery wall. Anyway I spent from roughly 1:45am – 4am last night trying to figure out how to best continue the stencil onto the angled portion of the ceiling. Turns out it’s not that simple. Also turns out if the stencil doesn’t line up perfectly (which it won’t) I think it will still look okay. And because I was up from 1:45am – 4am last night I don’t have the mental capacity to explain that in detail right now, so I’ll save that for the Week 3 update. 🙂
Thanks for being patient and continue to stay tuned. I promise Week 3 will be FAR more visually alluring and interesting to read about.
