The Kid’s Playroom Week 2: Decisions Cont. and Painting

The Kid’s Playroom Week 2: Decisions Cont. and Painting

Up until just a few years ago, I drove a 1995 Toyota Camry.  I remember going with my Dad to the car dealership to pick it out and I fell in love with its silvery blue/green color.  We named him Mr. Woo because the license plate randomly said exactly that.  Fast forward almost 20 years and the bright new car shiny-ness of Mr. Woo had faded and it was time to replace him with something safer for carting around our kids.  Now you may be wondering how this story is relevant.  The paint color I decided to choose for the playroom is very reminiscent of that same silvery blue/green of my ol’ faithful Mr. Woo.  More on that in a bit…

So while last week’s plan was pretty cohesive, I just couldn’t commit.  To refresh your memory, you can read my post HERE.  I kept changing my mind about which wall the waves should go on and where I could incorporate some color.  I had a serious case of designer writer’s block!  These decisions were keeping me up at night and I would fall asleep liking an idea and wake up hating it.  Here were my hangups:

  • I purchased white-based window coverings for the back wall with the windows, so I wanted a pop of color on that wall to offset the white of the curtains
  • If I did waves on the couch wall per the original plan, I felt it would be too busy to do another accent wall where the windows are since they are adjacent to each other

Here’s what I’m talking about.  See my dilemma?

Also I decided against a pink ceiling.  Why?  Well I couldn’t find a soft pink I liked in person and I felt the ceiling was the least of my worries.  Also Kendall started begging for a pink ceiling in her room, and two pink ceilings might be a tad much.  So Swiss Coffee it became.

I could honestly go on ad nauseam about the 500,000 ideas I had over the last week but I’ll skip to the chase:  I opted for two-toned walls on all three walls:  Swiss Coffee on the top half, and a custom color a la Mr. Woo on the bottom half that I can’t recreate because I am a glutton for punishment.  Seriously I am KICKING MYSELF for mixing my own color because I ran out of it and I still have some touch ups to do!  This is CASE AND POINT why paint stores tell you to NEVER EVER MIX your own color.  DON’T DO IT!  BUT if you want to try, because it is a really beautiful silvery blue/green, this is roughly 1/2 Washed Green and 1/2 Horizon Gray, both by Kelly Moore. 🙂

    So NOW the plan is:

  • Waves on window wall – custom color waves stenciled on top of white (HAHAHA I for real have to recreate it, I’m so dumb); and white waves stenciled on top the bottom color that I’m just going to start calling “Mr. Woo”
  • Paper planes on cubby wall
  • Some way to incorporate orange onto the couch wall, probably with a SIMPLE stencil pattern
  • A crazy crack house accent wall on the french door wall.  I mean it!  I’m talking BRIGHT ORANGE and TANGERINE and ZEBRAS.  You think I’m kidding.  I can see it in my head and it’s AWESOME.  The idea is that it will be layered stencils and look like a wallpaper.  That is the goal.  Ooooor should I just leave the kid’s artwork?  😉  By the way this was SO fun for them and such a nice way for me to bust out some quick rolling while they were distracted.  Win-win.

And here is the running budget:

  • Waves stencil:  $45
  • Paint and paint tools:  $100
  • Curtains and rod:  $40

That leaves me $65 for the remainder BUT I think I’m going to sell the rug that is currently in there which hopefully will put my remaining budget back over $100 so maybe the Sloth artwork can still happen!  Fingers crossed!

I’m going to take the weekend off from house projects, blogging, and social media to spend some QT with my besties from college who are both pregnant and therefore I get all the wine to myself.  Hip hip hooray!

Thanks for following along this journey with me.  See you next week!
